In Remembrance
Kurt Matzdorf,
founder of the
highly regarded metals program
at the State University of New'
York, New Paltz, and a master
metalsmith renow'ned for his
ceremonial objects-maces, me-
dallions, Judaica-died Decem-
ber 20 at the age of 86. Born in
Germany, Matzdorf began
teaching at
s u n y
New' Paltz in
1957, retiring as professor
emeritus in 1985. “Kurt Matz-
dorf was a man of umvavering
certainty and determination,”
Jamie Bennett and Myra Mim-
litsch-Gray, currently metals
professors there, wrote in a
statement. “His vision and pas-
sion for the world of jew'elry
and silversmithing set a stan-
dard for this program and the
profession. He championed an
understanding of the practice
through a thorough grounding
in the history of jewelry and
metal, w'ith an eye to the future.”

In Public
For a new public art project at
the Sava Pool in San Francisco,
Catherine Wagner photo-
graphed the swirling waves
made by a swimmer and repro-
duced the images on porcelain
enamel panels, now installed
on a wall overlooking the pool.
Their deep blue color echoes
that of custom-made Heath
ceramic tiles on adjacent w'alls.

To mark its 130th anniversary,
Duquesne University in Pitts-
burgh commissioned for its
campus an outdoor sculpture by
Kathleen Mulcahy and Ron
Desmett, founders of the Pitts-
burgh Glass Center. Called
The Spirit o f Duquesne
©, the
seven-foot-tall w'ork is made
of glass and steel, a nod to the
region’s industrial heritage.
